We review four camera gizmos for kids

PRODUCT SHOOTOUT

By Joe Dolittle

In this all-new product review shootout, we put four kid-safe(ish) camera(ish) products to the test. Read on to learn how Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera for Boys, Kid-Tough Digital Camera Case, RipRoar Creation Station from Manley, and Wild Planet Spy Video Car from Wild Planet stand up to our editorial review.

Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera for Boys

Preschoolers can learn the art of photography with this digital camera designed especially for them. With a 1.3" color LCD, preview screen, easy navigation menu, and wrist strap, it's meant to stand up to typical rough preschooler use.

Kids can instantly see the picture they've taken on the LCD screen or they can delete previous shots. It features dual handle grips ergonomically designed for little hands and two-eye viewing that makes looking through the viewfinder a breeze.

Connected Photographer's evaluation

This little beast doesn't take particularly good pictures, but it can withstand being eaten by a classroom of little monsters. It takes only 640x480 pictures, but. really, just how high a resolution do you need to take a picture of snot? At least you're not paying for the film! It's a wonder my parents survived my childhood, that's all I'm sayin'.

Seriously, though, this isn't a great camera. It isn't even a good camera. But it takes pictures and will survive at least a month (ok, maybe a week). If your kid's a horror and, yet, you still want to get him or her a camera, this is a good, if somewhat pricey choice.

Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera for Boys, has a retail price of $69.99. We give Fisher Price Kid-Tough Digital Camera for Boys a rating of 3 out of 5.

RATING: 3 STARS

Kid-Tough Digital Camera Case

Where's the best place for your spawn to keep his Kid-Tough Digital Camera? In this case! It's lightweight and easy to carry with plenty of room for your Kid-Tough Digital Camera, USB cord, and dead frogs to freak out Sally after milk and nap time.

Connected Photographer's evaluation

In your fantasies, your kid will put his stuff away. So, in your fantasies, your kid will put his camera in this case. Hey, it's under $20 and cases are cool. Buy it and if he puts his stuff away, you're a notch ahead of the game.

Kid-Tough Digital Camera Case, has a retail price of $16.29. We give Kid-Tough Digital Camera Case a rating of 3 out of 5.

RATING: 3 STARS

RipRoar Creation Station

The Creation Station allows you to film, edit, and share barely-recognizable videos so that you can display your creativity to the world. Using the included green screen, integrated software, and one-click upload, the possibilities are endless! For example you can easily make it look like you are surfing down a mountain, next to a bear, who's telling you a joke, with fish flying over your head! Or at least that's what the manufacturer claims.

Connected Photographer's evaluation

As products go, this isn't the best. The software's terrible, the camera is low quality, and the tripod doesn't hold up. Overall, it's a disappointment. Buy the kid a real camcorder and a book. If you buy this, don't forget that Amazon has a liberal return policy -- and use it.

RipRoar Creation Station, produced by Manley, has a retail price of $129.99. We give RipRoar Creation Station a rating of 2 out of 5.

RATING: 2 STARS

Wild Planet Spy Video Car

You see what the car sees. See in the dark with real night vision. This RC vehicle has a video camera and headset screen. The headset screen lets you see live video feed from the camera on the car. The LCD screen lets you navigate.

The video transmits at maximum range with 2.4 GHz transmission frequency. The screen is easy to view in the dark with backlit Active Matrix LCD. The screen appears as big as a 20" television at 5 ft. away with 4:3 aspect ration display screen.

Connected Photographer's evaluation

OK, this is a gimmick. We understand that. But it's cool. And it actually works. Since we're talking about connecting with photography, here's a way to transmit video from a car back to a head-mounted display. If you don't vomit, you'll love it. And little Jimmy? He'll play with it for at least an hour or two.

Wild Planet Spy Video Car, produced by Wild Planet, has a retail price of $159.99. We give Wild Planet Spy Video Car a rating of 3 out of 5.
