Nearly two years into the product life of Nikon's flagship D4 DSLR, the company has announced an updated model in the form of an "S" version. Nikon uses the S designation for performance upgrades to their DSLRs that are too small to warrant a new product number. Because it has the same 16.2MP resolution as the D4, some will see the D4S as a disappointment especially after Nikon's successful 36MP D800 launch. However, almost everything else about the D4S is an upgrade to the Nikon D4 meaning it is a no-brainer for any photographer who has the budget and wants the ultimate performance Nikon camera.Improved speed and image processing

The D4S' upgrades start with improved speed across the board. Frame rate has been increased to 11 fps, while images make it from camera-to-card up to 30% faster. Fortunately, Nikon has coupled that higher speed with a new mirror-moving mechanism that both reduces vibration and the amount of time that the viewfinder is blacked out while shooting bursts.

The new EXPEED 4 image processor also allows for faster Autofocus, better tracking of action, and a new 5-sensor Group Autofocus mode. Even though the D4S is the same resolution as the D4, the sensor has been redesigned. Coupled with the new image processing hardware it means the D4S can be set to shoot at up to an astounding 409,600 ISO which must be getting close to counting individual photons.

For maximum performance, tethered shooting can now be accomplished over gigabit ethernet. The D4S can also be set to record 4MP Raw files (using "Raw S" mode), creating smaller files and further speeding post processing. JPEG shooters will appreciate the improved Picture Control system, and 200-shot buffer for JPEG images.Upgrades for videographers

Read also:

Nikon D4S (CNET)

Nikon D4S: An Epic Pro DSLR in a Familiar, Jumbo Package (Gizmodo)

Nikon's new D4S DSLR improves speed and focusing, adds ISO settings up to ... (Engadget)

Explore: 49 additional articles.
