If only the highest-end DSLR will do for you, you'll be happy to know there's a new flagship full-frame Nikon camera at the top of DSLR mountain. The newly announced Nikon D4S is a successor to the venerable D4, and comes with a host of improvements, including better autofocus capabilities, enhanced low-light shooting, and speedier data handling.

While the two cameras have the same megapixel count and sensor size a 16.2-megapixel full-frame (FX format) imager the sensor tucked inside the D4S is a newly developed chip, and the camera offers a newer image processor in the form of Nikon's Expeed 4.

According to Nikon, the D4S's autofocus system is "tenacious," offering the same 51-point system found in the D4, but with a new focusing mode. While in its 11 fps continuous-shooting mode (with autofocus and auto-exposure enabled), a new "Group Area AF" option lets the shooter select one focus point, while the camera uses adjacent points to keep fast-moving subjects in focus.

This new flagship also looks to be an incredible low-light shooter. The D4 already reached up to astronomical ISO levels, but the D4S ratchets up the sensor's sensitivity to light even further. The D4 offered ISO settings up to 12,800 (expandable to 204,800), while the D4S goes a stop higher, with a maximum ISO setting of 25,600 (expandable to 409,600).

Read also:

Small improvements help boost performance in Nikon's new D4S flagship DSLR (Digital Trends)

Nikon's new D4S DSLR improves speed and focusing, adds ISO settings up to ... (Engadget)

Nikon D4S: A speedy pro DSLR that isn't afraid of the dark (Gizmag)

Explore: 57 additional articles.
