TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- According to a representative for the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, three men set out on still-icy roads Wednesday and stole an all-terain vehicle from a home in the south side of Tuscaloosa.Perhaps the trio imagined local law enforcement had their hands full dealing with keeping drivers safe on frozen and uncharacteristically perilous streets. If so, they were wrong.

Public information officer Lt. Andy Norris said the victim of the alleged theft gave police a good description of the vehicle in which the men made their escape.

The details were relayed to deputies all over the county. The department's helicopter unit, which was already in the air to monitor traffic conditions on the frozen streets, quickly spotted the suspect vehicle and began tracking it, keeping ground units updated on their position.

The trio was driving on I-59 North and exited on Covered Bridge Road at Exit 86, more than 10 miles down the interstate from the site of the theft.Norris said a Coaling police officer spotted the vehicle making for Brentwood and tried to pull them over, but the driver refused to stop and a short chase ensued and ended less than a mile away from the interstate.
