We've seen capoeira used in action movies like "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "Ocean's Twelve." Actor/producer Wesley Snipes showed off his capoeira chops in his "Blade" films, but a link to those would make you have bad dreams. Here's a clip from the 1993 movie, "Only The Strong", less blood, more capoeira.

Capoeira's history is dark, beginning with African slaves taken from the region of Angola. The slaves were shipped to Brazil, by Portuguese slave traders in the 16th century, to work on vast sugar plantations. Some of the slaves escaped captivity by performing the Angolan "zebra dance" in which men engaged in mock battle for the right to marry, with one important exception. When their slave masters began to enjoy watching the ritual the slaves would spin-jump and kick them in the face like a zebra would and escape. Sweet! Here's an in depth history.

Christian Petit photographed boys practicing capoeira on the beach in Chicama, Peru.

Do you have your own compelling travel photos to share? Join the Yahoo!
