Apparently the smelt along the Sandy River are a sly group of fish. According to Troutdale city councilor Glenn White, they appeared an hour after the six-hour window for harvesting them alotted by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife on Saturday, March 15.

There will be one other opportunity on Saturday, March 22, 2014, but by then the smelt will most likely be gone, says White. The longest he's seen a run last in recent history has been five days. He should know, because he lives right on the river and rents nets for catching the fish.At least the fish will live on in perpetuity in digital format.

Tasked with photographing the fleeting fish, I went about gathering my rain boots for walking on the banks of the Sandy River and my rain jacket to protect me from possible showers. But what to do for my camera gear?

I was told about this marvelous underwater image taken on someone's fancy red cell phone, a rugged item that could be submerged in water. Mark Cramlet, owner of Mark's Snack and Tackle at Glenn Otto Community Park in Troutdale, said the picture was clear as day.
